We Care for Our Air Redbridge
This exciting project saw us tasked with raising awareness among the local community of the harmful effects of air pollution, and offering simple tips for residents to lower their exposure. Thereby reducing cases of respiratory diseases, low birth weight and obesity in children. The campaign ran from June 2023 to November 2024, with schools and GP surgeries engaged as key stakeholders. Our ground-up approach saw pupils, parents, and local residents using citizen science to generate data that delivered the Air Quality stats behind the communications campaign.
Other activity included: Air Quality awareness surveys, school and community group workshops, generation of Redbridge Air Quality maps (based on our captured data), cycle training and installation of cycle storage, driver engagements through an anti-idling campaign, face-to-face and outreach work, establishing walk zone routes and low pollution route maps and signage, and a multimedia communications campaign entitled ‘We Care for Our Air’. These comms included collateral for GP surgeries and schools featuring ‘Healthy Lung Habits’ checklists, online and Digital Out Of Home (DOOH) advertising and social media activity.
Results:
The level of community engagement is exceeding expectations:
• Over 500 responses to the initial Air Quality survey were received
• 6 breathe London Nodes were installed, providing continuous, real-time air quality data
• 400 children were given cycle training; 132 adult cycle skills sessions were booked
• 3 Clean Air Play Street events and new cycle and scooter storage at 4 schools have been delivered
• The Redbridge Clean Air Twitter page has 1173 followers and a total of 86 posts over the project timeline
